What are burst frequencies?

A burst is an electrical fast transient (e.g. on the mains power line).

One frequent cause of burst faults is switches that are not switched at zero current, particularly if there are inductive loads on the electrical circuit. The burst faults occur not only in the same electrical circuit, but also in neighbouring circuits because of the electromagnetic influence.

The burst frequencies range from a few kilohertz up to several megahertz. The pulse voltages are between 100 V and several thousand volts.

The minimum requirements for immunity to fast transients (bursts) are specified in EN 61000-6-2. The test conditions are described in EN 61000-4-4.
