DC-UPS

Efficient, compact and reliable DC-UPS from PULS ensure highest system availability. Our uninterruptible power supplies are available with capacitor storage or VRLA batteries.

The DC-UPS with integrated electrochemical double layer capacitors are fully maintenance free and guarantee an uninterrupted power supply for periods measured in seconds.

The DC-UPS with external VRLA batteries feature the PULS' 1-Battery-Concept: This means each battery is individually charged and monitored, which avoids the need for matched batteries and ensures longest battery life.

What is a UPS module?

UPS is the short version of "uninterruptible power supply". In many applications a continuous power supply is important because power fluctuations and outages can cause damage to control equipment as well as unexpected down time. This situation can lead to a loss of productivity and revenue. As the number of power faults and outages increases worldwide, many users are installing backup systems, like a UPS module. During power failures, a UPS module can maintain the power supply for up to several hours. This means critical system components can be supplied continuously. Furthermore PLCs are able to end important processes without any damage and application data can be saved before losing.

What are the different types of UPS modules?

Each application area may require a different type of uninterruptible power supply module depending on its operation and sensitivity. PULS therefore offers UPS modules with capacitor storage and built-in battery that can be used in a broad range of applications:

  • UPS modules with capacitor storage are equipped with integrated electrochemical double layer capacitors. In case of a power fault they guarantee an uninterrupted power supply for several seconds. By using such UPS modules, processes can be completed and data saved, for instance. If buffering in the millisecond range is required to handle load fluctuations or voltage dips, we recommend the buffer modules with electrolytic capacitors.
  • UPS modules with battery are available with a built-in battery or can be connected to an external battery. Depending on the selected battery size, a power failure can be bridged up to several hours or even days. This helps to prevent long machine downtimes, as an example.

What do I have to consider when choosing a UPS system?

In every backup application, there are specific questions that must be answered to fully understand which devices are needed to prevent equipment failure.

  1. What output voltage is required?
  2. How much current requires backup?
  3. How much backup-time is required?
  4. And finally, are there any loads in this application that do not require backup and if so how many?

With this information, recommendations can be made on the necessary output power of the power supply as well as the backup method and any additional devices that might be required.

What are the benefits of PULS UPS modules?

1-Battery-Concept

PULS UPS modules have been developed according to the unique 1-Battery-Concept: The 1-Battery-Concept of the UB10 requires only one 12 VDC battery to back up a 24 VDC load. A stepup converter amplifies the 12 V from the single battery to a fixed regulated output voltage which is independent of the battery voltage.

The battery modules for the UB20 and UB40 have two 12 VDC batteries connected in series. Due to the PULS 1-Battery-Concept both batteries can nevertheless be charged and monitored independently. This enables an excellent battery management and prevents mismatching.

Optimized battery management

PULS 24 V UPS modules have an optimized battery management system for longest possible battery life. The uninterruptible power supplies have e.g. an adjustable maximum buffer time to protect the battery and the unit protects the battery from going into a deep discharge. Draining the battery all the way down can damage it in a very short period of time, especially if this occurs multiple times.

In addition, the PULS DC UPS can provide a distinct “Replace Battery” contact. This way the user knows exactly when to replace the batteries.

Protection features

PULS UPS modules check if the polarity of the battery connections and voltage are correct. For example, if a user would connect 24 VDC to the input terminals for the battery there would be no harm to the UPS module. The controller unit also checks the input connections from the power supply to see if the wiring and input voltage are correct.
