What is a 19-inch rack system?

A 19-inch rack is a modular system for mounting electronic equipment that complies with the DIN 41494 standard. The system consists of plug-in printed circuit boards (PCBs), PCB mounts (sub-racks) and 19-inch cabinets, all of which are designed to be compatible and to be combined with one another in different ways.

The most important dimensions of a 19-inch rack system are:

  • 1 HP (horizontal pitch): Unit of module width equivalent to 5.08 mm
  • 1 U (rack unit): Unit of module height equivalent to 44.45 mm

Standard PCB:

  • Eurocard format 3 U: 100 x 160 mm
  • Double Eurocard format 6 U: 233 x 160 mm

Tall PCB:

  • Tall Eurocard format 3 U: 100 x 220 mm
  • Double tall Eurocard format 6 U: 233 x 220 mm

The 19-inch rack system is a modular system that is frequently used to house measurement equipment, computer servers and industrial electronics.

In the 1980s and 1990s, PULS supplied a range of standard power supplies for 19-inch rack systems as part of its AP and APD series. More recently, PULS has also developed power supply modules for 19-inch racks in the form of value-add system solutions based on the available standard DIN rail power supplies.
